"SHOULD I CHOOSE A MALE OR FEMALE PUPPY?" This question will usually get a different answer every time you ask it!
HERE ARE THE FACTS THE WAY WE SEE IT: Many dog owners and breeders will tell you anything from "Males are sweeter" to "Females are much calmer". But you have to be really careful when listening to these types of opinions because there is simply no truth to broad statements like these.
If you think about this question by putting into "Human Perspective" you will get a better understanding of the truth to the matter. Some people would say that men are more aggressive, work harder, and are more intelligent than women. On the other hand women are much more emotional than men. Although there may be some truth to these theories in the broadest sense, there can also be alot of error. Many men are very aggressive in the work place, but there are also women who can run circles around their male counterparts. Likewise there are women who would never shed a tear while some men are extremely compassionate.
This is also very accurate when you use this judgement when choosing a puppy. Character traits are very much unique to each individual puppy in the litter and often have nothing to do with gender. We have had female pups that have been the bully in the whelping box just as often as the males. Broad generalizations can be very misleading when you are trying to pick out a puppy.
Some people tend to believe that male puppies will be larger than females. This is also not true with the doodles. This can be true with purebred Golden Retrievers for instance, but once you add the influence of the poodle - it is no longer true. This is because in the background of the Standard Poodle you can have dogs anywhere from about 15" at the shoulders up to 30" at the shoulders and this is really huge! In any litter you could have a male take after a smaller poodle in his background and a female take after a really large poodle. So once again it is really important to evaluate each individual puppy and it's own traits vs. listening to people's opinions that are not based in the real facts!
Many people also say "Well, I grew up with a female so that is what I want." There is nothing wrong with that, except you might overlook a better choice only because of gender.
